Fiber Broadband

Turk Telekom owns Turkey's primary fixed-line infrastructure, including copper DSL lines and an expanding fiber network. The company reported 13.7 million fiber subscribers in early 2025, covering both FTTB (fiber to the building) and FTTH (fiber to the home) deployments. VDSL over copper delivers 24-100 Mbps in areas without fiber.

Turk Telekom's backbone connects all 81 provinces and handles wholesale access for smaller ISPs including TurkNet and Millenicom.

Turkcell Superonline operates a 65,000 km independent fiber backbone, making it the largest alternative infrastructure owner. Superonline was the first Turkish provider to offer 1 Gbps residential fiber.

TurkNet has invested in its own GigaFiber network in major cities, offering symmetrical 1 Gbps connections and earning the highest measured speeds among Turkish ISPs. Where TurkNet lacks own fiber, it resells Turk Telekom wholesale access.

Mobile Networks

Mobile infrastructure runs on 4.5G (LTE-Advanced), launched in April 2016. Three operators (Turkcell, Turk Telekom, Vodafone) provide coverage to over 99% of the population in urban areas. Average mobile download speed is 53.21 Mbps nationally. The October 2025 spectrum auction raised $2.95 billion, with all three operators securing 5G frequencies.

Commercial 5G service targets April 2026 in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bursa, Kocaeli, and Konya before expanding nationwide.

Cable Broadband

International connectivity relies on submarine cables in the Mediterranean and Black Sea. The KAFOS cable (8 Tbps capacity) connects Istanbul to Bucharest, Romania. Turkcell Superonline positions Istanbul as a bridge between European and Asian internet traffic. The planned Kardesa cable system will add over 500 Tbps of capacity through the Black Sea, with Turkey landing expected before 2028.

Urban Areas

Internet speeds in Turkey vary sharply between western urban centres and eastern rural regions. Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir have the best connectivity, with multiple ISPs offering fiber plans up to 1 Gbps. Istanbul in particular benefits from competition between Turk Telekom, Turkcell Superonline, TurkNet, and Vodafone.

Fiber-to-the-home is widely available in urban apartment buildings across these three cities. Users in western Turkey can typically choose from 3-5 providers and access speeds above 100 Mbps.

Rural Areas

Rural and eastern Turkey face a significant connectivity gap. Only about 40% of households in eastern Anatolia have internet access. Fixed broadband coverage is sparse in parts of the Black Sea highlands, Southeast Anatolia, and remote Kurdish regions.

Many villages lack fiber or cable entirely and rely on sub-10 Mbps DSL or 4G mobile with weak signal strength. While 4.5G covers most populated areas, rural zones often receive degraded 3G service or a few bars of 4G.

Urban Areas

Turk Telekom has prioritized bringing fiber to all 81 province capitals and many district centres. Turkcell announced fiber expansion into several eastern provinces in 2025. Still, the gap remains large.

Urban users access 100-1,000 Mbps fiber, while rural users may get 5-20 Mbps on aging copper DSL. Approximately 78% of Turkey's population lives in urban areas, concentrating demand and investment in the west.

Turk Telekom (TTNet brand)

Turk Telekom (TTNet brand) holds 55.4% of fixed broadband subscribers, totaling 15.4 million connections. The company owns the national copper and fiber infrastructure and provides wholesale access to competitors. Plans range from 24 Mbps VDSL to 1 Gbps fiber depending on location. Turk Telekom also operates a mobile network with approximately 25 million subscribers.

Turkcell Superonline ranks second with 15% market share and operates 65,000 km of independent fiber. As a subsidiary of Turkcell (Turkey's largest mobile operator with 37 million subscribers), Superonline benefits from bundled mobile-fiber offers. Superonline was the first Turkish ISP to deliver 1 Gbps residential fiber and targets urban high-density areas.

TurkNet recorded the fastest measured speeds in Turkey during 2025 at 151.7 Mbps average download and 113.2 Mbps upload. The company offers GigaFiber with symmetrical 1 Gbps in cities where it owns fiber infrastructure.

Where it lacks own fiber, TurkNet resells Turk Telekom wholesale access at lower tiers. TurkNet is popular among tech-focused users for its no-commitment contracts and transparent pricing.

Vodafone Turkey

Vodafone Turkey competes in both mobile (approximately 16 million subscribers) and fixed broadband. Vodafone offers fiber plans through a combination of own infrastructure and Turk Telekom wholesale.

Turksat Kablonet

Turksat Kablonet provides cable broadband (DOCSIS) with speeds from 16 Mbps to 1 Gbps, primarily serving apartment complexes with existing cable wiring. Millenicom operates as a budget ISP reselling Turk Telekom infrastructure at lower prices.

Turkey's broadband pricing averages around 354.5 TRY per month ($10.95 USD at 2024 rates), making it one of the cheapest countries globally for internet access. Entry-level fiber starts at approximately 50-60 TRY/month for 8-24 Mbps VDSL, while mid-tier 100-300 Mbps fiber costs 200-400 TRY. Gigabit plans from TurkNet and Superonline run 500-800 TRY monthly.

The Turkish lira has depreciated significantly in recent years, which means costs in TRY have risen while remaining low in USD terms.

Providers frequently adjust pricing, and promotional rates often apply for the first 6-12 months before reverting to standard pricing. Most Turk Telekom plans require a 24-month contract. TurkNet differentiates with month-to-month contracts and no commitment periods.

Fair usage policies apply on some lower-tier plans, particularly ADSL and budget VDSL packages. Fiber plans from major providers generally include unlimited data. Mobile data plans range from 5 GB prepaid tourist SIMs around 300 TRY to unlimited postpaid at 500-800 TRY/month depending on carrier and speed tier.

Turkey's fiber subscriber base grew 19.6% year over year to reach 8.8 million FTTH/FTTB connections by mid-2025. Total fixed broadband subscribers stand at 20.7 million. VDSL remains common in buildings without fiber, delivering 24-100 Mbps over Turk Telekom copper. Cable internet through Turksat Kablonet covers select apartment complexes.

The country skipped 5G for nearly a decade, running on 4.5G (LTE-Advanced) since April 2016. The October 2025 spectrum auction finally cleared the path for 5G deployment.

Turkcell, Turk Telekom, and Vodafone each acquired spectrum in the 3.5 GHz and 700 MHz bands. Commercial 5G targets April 2026 in six major cities. Turk Telekom's 58% fiber-backed 5G readiness positions it as a strong early 5G performer.
