Both use 5G Standalone architecture on 3300 MHz spectrum with network slicing capability, unlike many markets still on Non-Standalone. Coverage reaches 60%+ urban population with 150M+ subscribers growing 10M+/month.

Fixed broadband is fiber-concentrated in metro cities: JioFiber leads with 12M subscribers, Airtel Xstream has 8M, BSNL Bharat Fiber serves 3M (government-subsidized rural), and ACT Fibernet holds 2.5M (South India specialist). India skipped cable broadband entirely. The market went straight from ADSL to FTTH. Fiber reaches 30M premises but only 8% household penetration.

For rural and remote connectivity, BharatNet has connected 200,000+ gram panchayats (village councils) with fiber and public WiFi hotspots. Jio-SES satellite partnership targets Himalayan regions and Northeast states, while Starlink approval remains pending.

Internet speeds in India show the widest urban-rural gap among major economies, with metro fibre delivering 10-50x faster speeds than rural 4G. Metro cities (Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai) offer 3-5 ISP choices with fiber speeds of 200-500 Mbps at ₹500-2,000/month plus ubiquitous 5G. Tier 2 cities (Jaipur, Lucknow, Ahmedabad) have 2-3 fiber providers plus 5G in urban cores.

South India tech hubs are particularly well-served. Bengaluru is ACT Fibernet's stronghold with 5-6 ISP choices in IT corridors.

Rural India (65% population, 920M people) faces a severe digital divide. Mobile 4G covers 85%+ of rural population via Jio and Airtel, but speeds drop to 10-30 Mbps. Fixed broadband is rare outside town centres.

BharatNet public WiFi at gram panchayat offices provides subsidised access. Northeast states (Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh) are the most underserved. Difficult terrain, political sensitivities, and low commercial viability limit deployment to 70-85% 4G coverage with 5G available only in Guwahati.

Airtel (414M, 35%) positions as the premium alternative with better customer service reputation and enterprise focus. Airtel Xstream Fiber starts at ₹499/month (40 Mbps) to ₹9,999 (1 Gbps). Both Jio and Airtel offer unlimited 5G on existing plans without premium pricing, unlike Western markets.

Vodafone Idea (Vi, 210M, 18%) is financially distressed with ₹2 trillion debt, declining subscribers, and delayed 5G. BSNL (90M, 7.7%) is government-owned with a ₹1.64 lakh crore revival plan for indigenous 4G equipment. ACT Fibernet (2.5M) is the South India fiber specialist with strong reputation in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad.

Budget options include Excitel (₹499 for 100 Mbps in Delhi/Bengaluru) and local cable MSOs collectively serving 10M+ subscribers.

India has the world's cheapest mobile data at $0.09/GB. Entry mobile plans start at ₹239/month (1.5 GB/day, unlimited calls), about 1% of the ₹25,000 median household income. Fiber entry is ₹399-599/month (30-100 Mbps) from JioFiber, Airtel, or local ISPs. Gigabit fiber costs ₹1,999-3,999/month from ACT, Airtel, or Jio.

Jio's 2016 disruption crashed data prices 95% (from ₹250/GB to pennies), enabling 741M internet users. However, the ₹200/month entry point remains significant for rural households earning ₹8,000/month. Both Jio and Airtel include unlimited 5G data on existing postpaid plans without premium pricing. This is a key differentiator versus Western markets where 5G costs extra.
