SFR is France's second-largest telecommunications operator with approximately 22 million subscribers across mobile and fixed services. Owned by Altice France, SFR provides fiber broadband with speeds up to 8 Gbps, mobile services on 4G and 5G networks, and triple-play bundles with TV and telephony across mainland France.

About SFR

SFR was founded in 1987 and has grown into one of France's four major telecom operators. Acquired by Altice in 2014, SFR merged with cable operator Numericable to create the largest fiber and cable network in France.

Headquartered in Paris, the company serves residential and business customers through its own fiber-to-the-home network and cable infrastructure using DOCSIS 3.1 technology. SFR also operates a nationwide 4G and 5G mobile network.

SFR Plans and Services

SFR Coverage by Region

SFR performance varies by location. Coverage density, local infrastructure, and network congestion affect speeds in each market.

Ile-de-France (Paris region)

Coverage: Full fiber and cable coverage across Paris and surrounding departments Typical: 320-420 Mbps average download on fiber. Cable areas average 200-400 Mbps. Peak congestion: Cable connections experience more congestion during evening peak than fiber

SFR's cable infrastructure from Numericable covers many buildings in the inner suburbs. XGS-PON available in newer installations.

Rhone-Alpes (Lyon, Grenoble)

Coverage: Good fiber coverage in Lyon, Grenoble, and Saint-Etienne. Cable available in some Lyon neighborhoods. Typical: 300-400 Mbps average download on fiber Peak congestion: Moderate congestion in Lyon during 8-11 PM

SFR competes directly with Bouygues and Free for fiber customers in this region.

Nord-Pas-de-Calais (Lille)

Coverage: FTTH expanding in Lille, Roubaix, and Tourcoing. Cable coverage in parts of Lille. Typical: 280-380 Mbps average download on fiber Peak congestion: Low to moderate congestion outside Lille city center

Some older cable areas may be limited to 500 Mbps until upgraded to fiber.

Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur (Marseille, Nice)

Coverage: Strong cable heritage in Marseille from Numericable. Fiber expanding in Nice and Toulon. Typical: 300-400 Mbps average download on fiber Peak congestion: Summer tourist influx increases congestion in coastal areas

Marseille has some of France's oldest cable broadband infrastructure, now being upgraded to FTTH.

Troubleshooting SFR Issues

Common SFR connection problems and how to fix them.

SFR Box Wi-Fi speeds are much slower than wired ethernet speeds

Cause: The SFR Box may be using congested Wi-Fi channels, or the 5 GHz band is not enabled. Wi-Fi 6E is only available on the SFR Box 8X.

  1. Log into the SFR Box admin panel at 192.168.1.1 and enable both 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands
  2. Switch to a manual Wi-Fi channel to avoid congestion from neighboring networks
  3. Place the SFR Box in a central location away from walls and electronic devices
  4. Connect bandwidth-heavy devices via ethernet for maximum speed
  5. Request a SFR Wi-Fi repeater if your home has dead zones

Cable broadband connection drops intermittently in areas using DOCSIS 3.1

Cause: Coaxial cable signal degradation or splitter issues in the building wiring. Peak-hour congestion can also affect cable connections.

  1. Check all coaxial cable connections for tightness and corrosion
  2. Remove any unnecessary cable splitters between the wall outlet and the SFR Box
  3. Restart the SFR Box by unplugging power for 30 seconds
  4. Test speeds during off-peak hours to determine if congestion is the cause
  5. Contact SFR at 1023 to request a technician check on the coaxial signal level

RED by SFR fiber activation takes longer than the promised timeline

Cause: Fiber installation requires a technician visit and building infrastructure may need additional work.

  1. Check activation status in the RED by SFR app or at red-by-sfr.fr
  2. Verify that your building has fiber infrastructure installed to the premises
  3. Contact RED by SFR support via chat in the app for a status update
  4. If no technician appointment appears within 2 weeks, file a complaint through the app

SFR Speed Test FAQ

How fast is SFR fiber internet?

SFR fiber delivers speeds up to 8 Gbps download on XGS-PON technology with the Premium plan. The Power S plan offers 1 Gbps, while Power provides 2 Gbps. SFR also operates cable broadband using DOCSIS 3.1 in some areas, delivering up to 1 Gbps. Actual speeds depend on your connection type, router capabilities, and whether you use ethernet or Wi-Fi. Areas with XGS-PON coverage get the fastest speeds.

What is the difference between SFR and RED by SFR?

SFR offers premium triple-play bundles with TV channels, phone calls, and higher speeds with a 12-month commitment. RED by SFR is the low-cost brand offering internet-only plans without commitment at lower prices starting at EUR 20.99 per month. RED plans do not include TV channels or a TV decoder. Both brands use the same SFR fiber and cable network, so internet quality is identical. Choose SFR for TV and bundles or RED for basic internet.

Does SFR have 5G coverage in France?

SFR operates a 5G network covering major cities and expanding to suburban areas across France. SFR's 5G uses 3.5 GHz spectrum for high-speed coverage. Mobile plans with 5G access are available starting at EUR 25 per month. SFR also offers 5G Home boxes for fixed wireless access in areas without fiber coverage. Check SFR's coverage map on their website to verify 5G availability at your address.

How do I test my SFR internet speed?

Use the speed test on this page to measure your SFR download speed, upload speed, and latency. For accurate results on fiber, connect via ethernet to the SFR Box router. On cable connections, test at different times since speeds can vary during evening peak hours. Close streaming applications and downloads before testing. The test takes approximately 30 seconds and measures your real connection performance against your plan speeds.
