Oi is Brazil's fourth-largest telecommunications company and a major fiber broadband provider with approximately 4 million FTTH connections. Formerly known as Telemar, Oi operates one of Brazil's largest fiber networks. The company was declared bankrupt in November 2025, but its telecom services continue under supervision by Anatel (Brazil's telecom regulator).

About Oi

Oi was created in 1998 from the privatization of Brazil's state-owned Telebras system. Originally named Telemar, the company inherited fixed-line operations across 16 states covering 65% of Brazilian territory. The company rebranded to Oi in 2007 and is headquartered in Rio de Janeiro.

Oi filed for its first bankruptcy protection in 2016 with BRL 65 billion in debt, one of the largest corporate bankruptcies in Latin American history. After emerging from restructuring, Oi sold its mobile customer base to Vivo, Claro, and TIM in 2022. Oi filed for a second bankruptcy in 2023 and was declared bankrupt in November 2025.

Despite the bankruptcy, Anatel confirmed that Oi's telecom services will continue operating under a bankruptcy trustee. The fiber broadband customer base was transferred to V.tal (a fiber infrastructure company) under the new brand Nio in February 2025. Existing Oi Fibra customers continue receiving service without interruption.

Oi Plans and Services

Oi offers several internet plans across different technologies and price points.

Oi Fibra offers residential plans starting at 200 Mbps for BRL 79.90 per month. The 400 Mbps plan costs BRL 99.90, and the 1 Gbps plan costs BRL 149.90 per month. All plans include a Wi-Fi router and have no data cap.

Oi Fibra's network reaches 4 million connected homes across multiple Brazilian states. The company invested in GPON and XGS-PON technology for its FTTH deployments. In 2022, Oi launched Oi FIBRA X with fiber-to-the-room technology for improved in-home Wi-Fi coverage.

Since the transfer to V.tal/Nio, new fiber subscriptions in former Oi areas are managed under the Nio brand. Existing Oi Fibra customers retain their plans and service levels. Oi no longer operates mobile services after selling its mobile division in 2022.

Is Oi Right for You?

Every provider has trade-offs. Here is how Oi performs based on real-world usage and customer feedback.

Strengths

  • Large fiber network covering areas underserved by Vivo and Claro
  • Entry pricing at BRL 79.90 for 200 Mbps is competitive
  • V.tal/Nio infrastructure is modern with recent GPON and XGS-PON investment
  • Service guaranteed by Anatel even during bankruptcy proceedings
  • Fiber-to-the-room (FTTR) technology available in select areas
  • Strong coverage in Northeast Brazil where other carriers have less fiber

Weaknesses

  • Bankruptcy creates uncertainty about long-term service quality
  • Customer service may be inconsistent during transition to Nio
  • No mobile service. Oi sold its mobile division in 2022
  • No new Oi Fibra subscriptions in most areas (managed as Nio)
  • Company leadership changes may affect network investment priorities
  • Cannot bundle with mobile from the same provider

Best For

  • Existing Oi Fibra customers who have a working connection
  • Users in regions where Oi's fiber network is the primary option
  • Budget users who find competitive pricing in Oi/Nio coverage areas
  • Residents in Northeast Brazil where Oi has stronger fiber coverage

Not Ideal For

  • New customers who want long-term stability (consider Vivo or Claro)
  • Users who want to bundle fiber with mobile service from one provider
  • Users who need guaranteed premium customer support
  • Those in areas where Vivo or Claro fiber is available (more stable options)

Troubleshooting Oi Issues

Common Oi connection problems and how to fix them.

Oi Fibra speeds are below the subscribed plan

Cause: Wi-Fi limitations, router placement, or congestion in the building.

  1. Test with a wired Ethernet cable to check if Wi-Fi is the bottleneck
  2. Restart the Oi router by unplugging power for 30 seconds
  3. Place the router in a central location away from walls
  4. Contact Oi support at 10331 or through the Oi app
  5. Check if a router firmware update is available

Worried about Oi Fibra service continuing after bankruptcy declaration

Cause: Oi was declared bankrupt in November 2025, creating customer uncertainty.

  1. Anatel has confirmed that Oi's telecom services will continue without interruption
  2. Your fiber connection is maintained by V.tal/Nio infrastructure, independent of Oi's finances
  3. Continue paying your bill normally. Service agreements remain valid
  4. Monitor Anatel announcements for any changes affecting your area
  5. Consider migrating to Vivo or Claro if available at your address for greater stability

Oi Speed Test FAQ

Is Oi Fibra still working after the bankruptcy?

Yes. Oi Fibra continues operating despite Oi's bankruptcy declaration in November 2025. Anatel (Brazil's telecom regulator) confirmed that Oi's telecom services will not be interrupted. The fiber infrastructure was transferred to V.tal, and the customer-facing operations are being managed under the new Nio brand. Existing customers continue receiving service at their current plan speeds and prices. The bankruptcy trustee supervises ongoing operations. If you are an existing customer, your service should remain unaffected.

What is the relationship between Oi, V.tal, and Nio?

Oi built Brazil's fiber broadband network. V.tal is the fiber infrastructure company that acquired Oi's fiber assets. Nio is the consumer brand created to serve former Oi Fibra customers. The transfer completed in February 2025. V.tal owns and maintains the physical fiber cables and equipment. Nio handles customer service, billing, and plan management. For existing Oi Fibra customers, nothing changed in terms of daily service. New broadband subscriptions in former Oi areas are now sold under the Nio brand.

Should I switch from Oi Fibra to another provider?

If your Oi Fibra service is working well, there is no immediate need to switch. The fiber infrastructure is managed by V.tal, which operates independently from Oi's bankruptcy proceedings. However, if you want mobile bundling or greater long-term certainty, switching to Vivo or Claro fiber is reasonable where available. Check if competing fiber providers serve your address, compare speeds and prices, and consider whether you benefit from bundling internet with mobile. Switching makes the most sense if another provider offers faster speeds or lower prices at your specific address.
