Cable Broadband

The Strategic Evolution Underwater Link (SEUL) submarine cable represents Belize's major international connectivity infrastructure. Deployed by Belize Telemedia Limited and Huawei in 2016, SEUL spans 24 kilometers connecting San Pedro, Ambergris Caye to the mainland.

Fiber Broadband

The cable features 8 fiber pairs with 40 channels at 100G per fiber, providing design capacity up to 32 Tbit/s. This project formed part of BTL's four-year USD 100 million infrastructure modernization program.

Legacy undersea cables including segments of the ARCOS-1 system also land in Belize, tying the country into regional Caribbean and Central American networks.

Fiber Broadband

Domestic fiber expanded primarily through Digi's nationwide deployment. Fiber-to-the-home networks reach Belize City, Belmopan, San Pedro, Dangriga, San Ignacio, Orange Walk Town, Corozal Town, and other major population centers. Digi replaced legacy copper wire infrastructure with fiber optics, bringing modern data infrastructure to urban areas.

Regional operators like Centaur Cable deployed cable and fiber networks in Orange Walk and Corozal districts. Smart operates limited fiber in select areas while focusing on wireless technologies.

Mobile Networks

4G LTE mobile networks cover major highways and population centers. Digi and Smart both operate 4G networks serving 84.5% of mobile subscriptions. Coverage reaches Belize City, Belmopan, San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Placencia, and other tourist destinations.

3G networks provide backup coverage in areas without 4G. Rural and remote regions depend on 3G or fixed wireless connections. No 5G networks operate as of early 2026, though operators consider future deployment.

Mobile towers face deployment challenges in dense forests and low-density areas. Fixed wireless access using 4G LTE technology connects areas where fiber deployment remains economically unviable.

Urban Areas

Tourist destinations including San Pedro, Caye Caulker, and Placencia prioritize infrastructure with fiber and 4G LTE networks. San Pedro features some of the fastest speeds in Belize with fiber-optic submarine cable connectivity delivering up to 130 Mbps through DigiNet service.

Hotels and resorts invest in reliable connectivity to serve international visitors. However, coverage quality varies significantly between established tourist zones and surrounding areas.

Rural areas face a sharp digital divide affecting 53% of the population. Only 72.4% of Belizeans have internet access overall, with rural penetration substantially lower than urban rates. Rural residents often lack fiber options and depend on mobile broadband, fixed wireless, or satellite connections.

Remote and Underserved

Smart (Speednet Communications) operates as the smaller private competitor serving over 100,000 mobile customers. Smart focuses primarily on mobile services and fixed wireless broadband. Smart achieved the fastest upload speeds in Q3 2025 at 52 Mbps according to Ookla testing.

The operator

The operator offers Smart Broadband Unlimited fixed wireless with unmetered data at lower price points than Digi fiber. Smart competes on price rather than speed, targeting budget-conscious consumers and areas without Digi fiber. Coverage concentrates in major towns and highways. Prepaid mobile plans provide flexible options without long-term commitments.

Centaur Cable

Centaur Cable serves regional markets in Orange Walk and Corozal districts. The operator delivers cable broadband at 10-50 Mbps with plans starting around BZD 49 for 20 Mbps. Centaur provides an alternative to Digi in covered areas with competitive pricing.

Coverage remains limited to northern districts. Small local operators and WISPs serve niche markets in specific towns, though market share remains minimal compared to Digi's dominance.

Affordability

Internet costs a moderate portion of Belizean household income adjusted for purchasing power. The average household earns approximately BZD 3,000-4,000 monthly in 2025. Fixed broadband represents 3-5% of household income, typical for Central American developing economies.

Fiber entry plans start at BZD 39 per month for basic DSL from Digi, the most affordable option. Fiber-to-the-home ranges from BZD 60-80 monthly for 20-50 Mbps to BZD 120-150 monthly for 100-150 Mbps. Premium plans reach BZD 180-200 monthly for 200 Mbps.

Contract and Fees
